Xiongye Xiao

Principal Investigator

Xiongye Xiao is an Assistant Professor in the Min H. Kao Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. He joined UTK in Fall 2025, following his Ph.D. at the University of Southern California (2019–2025) and undergraduate study at Zhejiang University (2015–2019).

Tom Olesch

Tom Olesch

My research focuses on world models for surgical robotics. I use differentiable physics and system identification from real-world video to predict how tissue responds to instrument actions. Before joining UTK, I worked on 3D computer vision for my master’s thesis at Carl Zeiss AG. Outside research, I enjoy tennis and hiking in the Smoky Mountains.

I am pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Computer Science at UTK. My research uses structural and multiscale analysis to study how intelligence emerges from the internal organization of machine learning systems. Outside research, I enjoy playing the trombone and learning Chinese.

I go by JC and study Computer Science and Mathematics at UTK, with an honors concentration and expected graduation in Fall 2026. My research focuses on vehicle routing problems, integrating machine learning with classical combinatorial optimization. I am also interested in graph theory, graph transformers, and large language models. Outside research, I enjoy chess, Rubik’s cube speedsolving, coding, tennis, and trumpet.

In DUAL, I hope to deepen my understanding of AI for Science. Outside academics, I enjoy creative pursuits, exploring new hobbies, and spending time with friends and family.
